Variopool secures 2014 Commonwealth Games pool

December 2011

The Tollcross Aquatic Centre is making preparations to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games' swimming events. This Glasgow landmark was already a state-of-the-art facility when it opened 15 years ago as the pool came equipped with a 25 x 25m movable floor supplied by Variopool. Renovations are now underway to the existing 50m competition pool and the upgraded venue will include an additional 50m six-lane swimming pool to serve as a warm-up pool for Glasgow 2014. As the original movable floor in the main pool has worked trouble-free since its installation back in 1996, Variopool has been asked to supply a second movable floor measuring 25 x 15m as well as a 15m traversal bulkhead in order to increase the overall flexibility of the new 50m pool.

Barr Construction has started work on site and the new facility should be open to the public in June 2013. Additional renovations include a 1,000 additional permanent spectator seats, new fitness suites, an extension to the existing changing facilities, an upgraded café and a general upgrade and refresh to the existing facilities.

HEERHUGOWAARD, NETHERLANDS, May 6, 2011 -

VARIOPOOL B.V. based in Heerhugowaard, the Netherlands, has been honoured with a Best Quality Award by the Balfour Beatty Construction Group for their work on the new London Aquatics Centre.
Variopool received the quality award for its specialised line of movable floors and bulkheads installed in the various swimming pools situated inside the London Aquatics Centre. The yet-to-be opened natatorium includes two 50m pools - one Olympic competition pool and one training pool - as well as a 5.0m deep competitive diving pool. Variopool has supplied and installed four movable floors, three of which cover an area of 25.0 x 21.0m, along with three large bulkheads. Two of the bulkheads are of the traversal type meaning they move horizontally through the water and can divide the pool into various configurations. The 50m Olympic pool also includes a 25.0 x 1.50m submersible bulkhead which moves vertically through the water and when not in use can be lowered into a 3.50m deep trench.

The winners of the Quality and Innovation Awards were determined by an independent group within the Balfour Beatty organisation involved with the London Aquatics Centre construction project. The individuals were asked which products they valued in a variety of categories and Variopool won in terms of quality.

The poll was conducted during March and April 2011 by an internal group of Balfour Beatty professionals.
The award was presented to Variopool by the Olympic Delivery Authority at a ceremony in London on May 5, 2011.
